Benefits Of Belly Dance
At last there is a way to stay fit that is enjoyable and effective. This ancient art form strengthens the entire body — especially the deep postural muscles of the spine, abdomen and hips, while enhancing the body's flexibility through flowing and rhythmic movement. Not only is it FUN, but Belly Dance is a great stress reliever and a safe and effective way to achieve lasting fitness. Whether you're a beginner or a lifetime student of this art, and whatever your shape, size, or age, Belly Dance is sure to captivate you and help you develop personal expression through movement.
What is Belly Dance?
Belly Dance is an ancient multicultural dance form which is also known as Near Eastern Dance, Middle Eastern Dance, Orientale Dance, or Raqs Sharqi. Because each region and ethnicity has its own varieties of dance, the term “Middle Eastern Dance” encompasses a very wide range of dances throughout the Middle East and North Africa . The focus is on rhythmic, flowing movement of all parts of the body, artistically executed to the hauntingly captivating music of the Middle East . Modern Belly Dance, intensely popular in the U.S. and internationally, has evolved to incorporate personal interpretation and style as well. Women worldwide continue to enjoy the beauty, expression and fitness which are key benefits of this graceful dance.
The Dance Instructor
Hyetti, whose Egyptian name means “life”, has been a follower of this dance form for many years. She had the honor of living in Tunisia and being a member of the Troupe Nationale des Arts Populaires, the only non-Tunisian to ever have been invited to join the troupe. On her return to the U.S., she studied Oriental Dance with several top name performers, and performed professionally and taught Belly Dance throughout the Chicagoland area. Her style and training include a unique blend of Greek/Turkish, Egyptian and Tunisian dance. Having traveled to Egypt several times, Hyetti has utilized her unique background experience to bring a love of Belly Dance to her numerous students and to share the joy of this exotic art with others.
What Do I Need to Get Started?
Our classes are informal and geared to the comfort and ease of our students. Yoga pants and a loose top are commonly worn, with any type of scarf or chain belt over the hips to better accent hip movements. Practice belts are also provided for students who don’t have their own, yet many prefer to get a coin or beaded hip scarf to use for home practice. Hip scarves of a variety of price ranges are often available on site from Hyetti Dance.
What Is a Typical Class?
Classes start with a brief stretching warm-up in front of mirrors to improve body tone and prepare for the joys of dance and flowing movement. This is followed by review, practice and ongoing dance instruction. Music is integral to each part of the class, with Hyetti playing zils to accent rhythms and help coordinate movements. Students learn to recognize how and when to move to various rhythms, with the help of some choreography and modeled improvisational dance. At the end of the class, students relax on yoga mats and cool down with a series of stretches and extensions to further release muscle tension and enhance flexibility. Our students leave refreshed and invigorated from a healthy workout experienced in an atmosphere of Fun, Friendship and Fitness.
